About WXYC 89.3 FM Radio
WXYC 89.3 FM is a prominent student-run, non-commercial college radio station proudly licensed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Broadcasting directly from the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, its powerful 1,100-watt signal covers roughly 900 square miles around the North Carolina Triangle region.
A Pioneer in Internet Broadcasting
While the station originally launched its terrestrial broadcast on March 17, 1977, it holds a massive and groundbreaking place in digital history. In November 1994, WXYC made history by becoming the very first radio station in the world to broadcast its signal over the Internet. This pioneering spirit continues today, allowing global listeners to tune in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Eclectic and Freeform Format
Automated directories often incorrectly label the station as a standard "Alternative" rock channel, but its true format is deeply eclectic and freeform.
