About WRTC-FM - 89.3 FM Radio
WRTC-FM - 89.3 FM has been a fixture of the Hartford airwaves since the mid-1950s, making it one of the oldest college radio stations in the United States. Broadcasting at 89.3 on the FM dial, the station is run entirely by students, faculty, and community volunteers from Trinity College. It began as a small carrier-current AM operation, then grew into a licensed FM outlet that now reaches listeners across central Connecticut.
A Freeform Legacy
Unlike commercial stations that follow tight playlists, WRTC-FM - 89.3 FM embraces a freeform format. Disc jockeys pick their own music, which means one hour might feature punk rock, the next could spin jazz, reggae, hip-hop, or obscure indie albums. The station's alternative lean has made it a launching pad for lesser-known artists. And because the schedule rotates constantly, no two days sound alike.
That matters. Hartford listeners who crave surprises tune in.
More Than Music
The station also airs Trinity College sports broadcasts, public affairs programs, and specialty shows hosted by longtime community members. Its transmitter sends a signal that stretches past Hartford's city limits into neighboring towns, giving the region a true community broadcast voice. Over the decades, thousands of volunteers have learned the craft of radio behind its studio doors, and many went on to careers in public media, journalism, and the music industry.
