About WBAI 99.5fm Radio
A Voice of Independent Radio in NYC
WBAI 99.5fm Radio has lived in the shadow of skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan for over fifty years. It is more than just a station on a dial to the people here. This outlet has served the city as a trusted source for news and progressive ideas. Its history is woven deeply into the fabric of civil rights and labor movements. Many older neighbors remember the first shows from the 1960s. People in the boroughs value the voice that speaks for the overlooked citizens. They stay loyal through all the changes.
Unlike commercial giants, this broadcaster keeps its daily programming free of heavy corporate advertising slots. The signal rides a strong frequency right across the entire local metro area. A dedicated transmitter on the east coast pushes the sound far and wide. Residents in the subway cars often catch the early morning broadcast. It fills the commute with context that other channels simply ignore completely. Sounds travel well through brick walls. Music blends in to soften the heavy political talk.
- Daily news updates from the national Pacifica network.
- Deep interviews with authors, musicians, and activists.
- Live coverage of local protests and town meetings.
And the legacy continues to grow under new ownership today. WBAI 99.5fm Radio still holds its ground against the commercial tide. Some years brought serious funding struggles, yet the signal held firm. Trust runs deep among those who listen daily. It is a true community hub for free expression. That history always makes it special. Listeners never forget the stories.
